Huge fire at Grimsby Road Methodist church in Cleethorpes

Dramatic blaze at landmark building which had been earmarked for flats

A huge fire broke out at the Beaconthorpe Methodist Church in Cleethorpes on Thursday night.

Dramatic footage showed the landmark church engulfed by flames after the blaze broke out at around 10pm. Dozens of firefighters battled through the night to bring it under control.

In August, Grimsby Live reported on plans to convert the Grade II-listed church into six apartments. The proposal was welcomed as an opportunity to safeguard the future of the building.

No one was injured in the fire. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said an investigation into the cause of the blaze would begin today.

Built in 1913-14, the church was given listed status in 1980. It has not been used for two years. It had suffered from vandalism and anti-social behaviour in the past.
